A Colossal Workshop: Hand-Built Decorative Clay Techniques with Sophie Woodrow

Artist Sophie Woodrow joins Colossal for a technique workshop on decorative patterns for clay. In this two-hour session, Woodrow will teach the textured motifs she utilizes in her figurative porcelain works on small pinch pots. Attendees are invited to work on their preferred material to learn coiling, chequering, dotting, and more, which can be translated to a variety of projects. As this is a technique workshop, the goal is not necessarily to finish the session with a completed project, although participants may do so.

When: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. CDT (12 p.m. to 2 p.m. EDT) on May 13, 2023

Required materials:

• Clay—stoneware, terracotta, porcelain, or air-dry will work. Woodrow will be demonstrating on porcelain.
  
• A range of wooden modeling tools, including a small loop or scoop tool.
• Paint brushes in different sizes and softness.
• A small plaster bat or a piece of clay dried to be leather hard (you can make the latter yourself!).
• A hand-held extruder.
