Phaidon Press
JR: Can Art Change the World? is a revised and expanded edition of Phaidon's original monograph first published in 2015 and later updated in 2019. Written and designed in close collaboration with the artist, this expanded edition includes a half-decade of new projects and commissions while also exploring numerous collaborative projects around the world.
This updated edition includes four new chapters focusing on some of JR’s recent work: "Tehachapi" (2019-20, 2022), a series of murals created in the yard of a California maximum-security prison, including one featuring portraits of 28 members of the incarcerated population pasted on the floor of the yard with their help; "Omelia Contadina" (2019- 21), performative events created to shine a light on the destruction of the agricultural landscape and the plight of farmers in Italy; "Trompe l’œil" (2016-ongoing), a series of ‘trick-of-the-eye’ murals in places such as the Pyramids of Giza, the Eiffel Tower, Death Valley, and the Louvre, amongst others; and "Déplacé·e·s" (2022-23), a series of installations that spread awareness about the millions of refugee children around the world, from Ukraine to Rwanda to Colombia, which was featured on the cover of TIME Magazine in 2022.
